Gas Exchange In Humans Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is gas exchange
The process of taking in gases that are needed for life processes and getting rid of waste gases
Where are gases exchanged
In the alveoli
Process of inspiration
Intercostal and diaphragm muscles contract
Rib cage moves upwards and outwards
Increase volume in thoracic cavity increases
Lung pressure decreases
It’s an active process so requires energy
Process of expiration
Intercostal and diaphragm muscled relax
Rib cage moves down and in
Volume of thoracic cavity decreases
Lung pressure increases
Passive process so doesn’t require energy
Alveoli structure
Wall of alveolus made from a single layer of thin flat cells
Walls of alveoli contain the protein elastin which makes it elastic which helps the alveoli return to their normal shape after ventilation
Gas exchange in the alveoli
Oxygen diffuses out the alveoli and into a compound called haemoglobin in the blood
Carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli from the blood
