effect of aspirin on the stomach

  • direct irritant of the gastric mucosa
  • reduction in PGE2 (usually increases mucus and HCO3 secretion)
  • reduction in PGI2 (usually increases gastric blood flow to eliminate acid that had diffused into submucosa)
  • antiplatelet effect: propogation of any gastric bleeding.
