What are the three zones of the esophagus?
Upper zone which is striated, middle zone which is striated and smooth and lower zone which is smooth
What is the function of the esophagus?
The esophagus receives food from the Larnygopharynx and transport it into the stomach by releasing mucus
What are the three stages of swallowing?
Voluntary phase, pharyngeal and esophageal phase
What is receptive relaxation of the stomach?
This is the process whereby irrespective of the content of the stomach and an increase in the volume of the stomach. The pressure in the stomach remains the same, or the size of the stomach remains the same.
What is peristalsis
Peristalsis is the circular movement of smooth muscles that causes the content of food to move from the proximal to the distal part and in the stomach allows the content of the food to be mixed with gastric juices
What is phasic contraction?
This type of contraction is rhythmic and short, lasting and involves Peristalsis and segmentation segmentation is the process whereby the content of food is mixed with gastric juices in the small intestine
What is tonic contraction?
This is a sustained contraction which last four minutes two hours and prevent backflow it involves the sphincter such as anal and pyloric sphincter
What are the three types of exocrine glands of the stomach?
We have the parietal cells that produce hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor. We also have the chief cells that produce Pepsinogen and then we also have the mucus neck that produces mucus.
What activate Pepsinogen to Pepsin
HCL
Give me the roles of HCL
The acidity helps to kill bacteria. It helps in the transformation of iron , and it prepares proteins to be acted on by proteases
