Gender roles Flashcards
(20 cards)
Joint and Segregated Conjugal roles
Segregated conjugal roles mean that the responsibilities within the households are clearly divided into male and female tasks. Joint conjugal roles mean that the domestic responsibilities are shared relatively equally between partners
Instrumental and Expressive roles
Instrumental roles typically involve work outside of the family that provides financial support and establishes family status. Expressive roles typically involve work inside of the family which provides emotional support and physical care for children
Symmetrical family
The symmetrical family is where a family divides all responsibilities equally between partners
Domestic division of labour
the division of tasks within the household between partners. For example, men will fulfil the breadwinner responsibilities and women will complete the child rearing
Dual Earner Families
romantically involved (either married or unmarried) and each contribute to the financial support of their household through their work outside the home
Gender Pay gap
the difference in average gross hourly earnings between women and men. 2025 = 8.6%
Childcare
34% of female parents work part time compared to only 6% of male parents. Women spend 30 minutes more per day on childcare than men.
Only 1/3 of dads take paternity leave. only 10% of full-time stay at home parents are male.
Emotional work
A mom gently coaxes her toddler out of a tantrum when dad can’t deal with it. A woman visits her ill father-in-law in the hospital because her partner can’t go there without feeling upset. Each is an example of “emotional labor,” or putting another’s feelings and desires before your own
Dual Burden
the challenges a mother faces when balancing employment and domestic responsibilities, paid and unpaid work.
Tripple shift
Duncombe and Marsden argue that women are putting in a ‘triple shift’, the dual burden plus having to engage in emotional work, such as caring for upset children and dealing with family rows
Power relationships
People enter into power relationships when they try to control or influence other people’s behaviour, or when others try to control them. Power relationships operate when there are inequalities in power between individuals and groups
Decision-Making
men tend to make the bigger decisions without the input of their partner
Pooling of recourses
the grouping together of resources (assets, equipment, personnel, effort, etc.) for the purposes of maximising advantage or minimising g risk to the users. one of the 4 functions of the family.
Domestic violence
Whilst the number of reports of domestic violence is higher amongst women, nearly one in six men will be victims at some point in their lifetimes.
Domestic abuse
There are different types of abuse, including physical, sexual and emotional. Domestic violence can happen between two adults, or between an adult and a child. National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has revealed that 1 in 5 children had been abused by a parent during their childhood
Gender scripts
a concept in feminist studies that refers to structures or paths created by societal norms that one is supposed to follow based on the gender assigned to them at birth
Lagged Adaptation
women are going into work faster than men are taking on household chores, but they will eventually be equal
New Man
Another family form that exists, especially in a postmodern society, is one where the female adult in the family is the “breadwinner” and the husband does most of the domestic work
