How does gene expression work?

A

The process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. It refers to a gene being transcribed into mRNA and translated into a protein.

– When the product (protein) of a gene is made, it is expressed
– Traits are characteristics determined by the genes being expressed
– Genes can be switched off or on
