how is the sections of DNA separated using gel electrophoresis?
a small electrical current flows in a buffer solution through an agarose gel between the cathode and anode that are connected to a power bank
how are wells formed in the agarose gel?
by placing a comb in the gel and allowing it to harden around it
what is the procedure for extracting DNA in plant tissue?
-add a pinch of salt and a small amount of cold water to the plant material
-use a blender to break up plant material
-strain off large pieces of plant material and mix the remaining solution with detergent to break down the cell membranes
-leave for 5-10 minutes
-add the enzyme protease to separate the DNA from the chromosomes
-gently add a layer of very cold ethanol
which causes the DNA to move out of the solution and it can be seen as white strands.
