-lie a blade of grass flat on a microscope slide
-place water on the slide with a water pipette
-using a safety blade, gently sweep the blade along the top of the grass removing tissue from its length
-repeat with the blade always coming from the same direction and adding water to reduce friction
-when enough layers have been removed, the green colour will disappear as only epidermal layer is left
-examine epidermal layer under microscope
