Gene to Protein Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is Transcription
The process where the genetic info stored in a gene is copied into a form of messenger
What does RNA polyamerase do?
Does the transcription process, binds to the promotor at the start of a gene, winds through the DNA, adding nucleotides following the base-pair rules.
Once it reaches the end, the RNA strand is released
What are the 3 main types of RNA and what is their purpose
messenger RNA
ribosomal RNA - forms structural part of ribosomes
transfer RNA - helps with the translation process, reads mRNA and translates the code
Which one has to be removed? Intron or exon
introns must be removed from the pre-mRNA by a process called splicing
What is a codon?
a 3 nucleotide code
What is an anticodon
RNA copy of codon on DNA
gene
A single hereditory unit of DNA, contain instructions to make proteins
Promotor
Binds the RNA polyamerase - transcription start site
coding region
The region of a gene that contains the actual instructions, introns and exons, introns must be removed before the mRNA is finished
