A

3 tiers:

Steinfeder (15°KMW, max 11.5% abv)
Federspiel (17°KMW, 11.5-12.5% abv)
Smaragd (19°KMW, min 12.5% abv)

No chaptilization, sussreserve, concentration, additives, aromatization, fractionation.

Vineau Wachau wines may be composed solely of grapes grown in Wachau and bottled in Wachau

What is Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC)?

A

if the producers in a region can agree on a grape variety (or varieties), a style of wine (and a set of regulations to go with it) that they think best reflects their area, then the region can be awarded DAC status.

Only wines that conform to this style can use the name of the appellation

A

primarily used in Niederösterreich

similar to Burgundy cru system, classifies vineyards based on their historical quality and potential
(not a legal classification yet)

3 levels:

  1. Gebietswein (regional wine)
  2. Ortswein (village wine)
  3. Riedenwein (single-vineyard wine)

Riedenwein has special 2 classifications:
1. Erste Lage (First Growth)
2. Grosse Lage (Great Growth, still in development)
