Why may there be lower environmental quality in developing countries
There is less environmental regulation, therefore international companies may come in and damage the countries. Also there is a focus on short term survival of individuals rather than the environment
What did Potter et al (2012) argue
that subsistence farming tended to be environmentally sustainable. The GR then spread across parts of the global south in the 60s onwards which had large environmental impacts.

Ramphal (1992)
Ramphal (1992) stated that poor people often have to destroy their own environment, not because they are ignorant but because they need to survive. As a result they over use resources.

Holmberg and Thompson (1991)
Poor people manage their environments in more sustainable ways, and that poverty actually limits their impact on the environment. Instead they argue that wealth can lead to environmental degradation
