General Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is kyphosis?
Excessive outward curvature of the spine, causing hunching of the back.
What is lordosis?
Lordosis refers to an exaggerated inward curve of the spine. Some people call the condition “swayback.”
How do you naturally distract the spinous processes?
The patient should be placed in a prone position on a frame that decreases the lordosis of the spine and allows for the abdomen to not be compressed. It is advisable to tilt the pelvis by inclining the table at the level of the pelvis. This will allow for a natural distraction of the spinous processes. The frame and operating table need to be radiolucent in both an AP and a lateral plane.
What is manual palpation?
Palpation is the process of using one’s hands to check the body, especially while perceiving/diagnosing a disease or illness. Usually performed by a health care practitioner, it is the process of feeling an object in or on the body to determine its size, shape, firmness, or location.
What does Superior & Inferior mean?
Superior or cranial - toward the head end of the body; upper (example, the hand is part of the superior extremity). Inferior or caudal - away from the head; lower (example, the foot is part of the inferior extremity).
What does Anterior & Posterior mean?
Recall that the word anterior means that something is towards the front of the body, while the word posterior means that something is towards the back of the body. We also have the term superior, which means towards the head or above something and the word inferior, which means towards the feet or below something.
What doe sit mean to decorticate the spinous processes?
Decortication is a medical procedure involving the surgical removal of the surface layer, membrane, or fibrous cover of an organ. The procedure is usually performed when the lung is covered by a thick, inelastic pleural peel restricting lung expansion.
When sizing your implant and your Graduated Sizing Tap indicates you’re in between 2 sizes which one do you choose?
You size down.
When inserting the device, where do you want ti to be placed?
You want it to be placed as anterior as possible between the spinous processes. the barrel of the device should be up against the lamina.
What sizes are available for this implant?
8, 10, 12, 14, 16 mm
What coats the outside of the implant?
Hydroxyapatite
How does Minuteman prevent micromotion for a successful fusion?
#1 - The threads #2 - The clamping wings
Over 1600 cases and no fractured spinous processes. How?
This is an MIS. There is no malleting & no forcing anything through the space. Instead, you are machining your way into the space. Your creating the perfect space for the implant.
Spinal Simplicity History?
Gained approval in Europe in 2011. First cases done in 2012. Over 1600 cases in US so far.
What grade of spondy is this device for?
Grade 1 & grade 2. For grade 2 it is for mild to moderate cases.
What are the indications?
Degenerative disc disease (DDD) (defined as back pain of discogenic origin with degeneration of the disc confirmed by history and radiographic studies);
Spondylolisthesis;
Trauma (i.e., fracture or dislocation); and/or
Tumor
