What is the rural urban continuum
A concept that describes the gradual transition between rural and urban areas
What are the 2 things that change with the different levels of the rural urban continuum
Population density, the characteristics of the built environment
What are the 2 model that can describe the structure of cities
Burgess model and Hoyts model
What is the burgess model
Shows the city as bands moving outward from the central business district to factories and the housing at which grows as you get further out from the city centre
What is the Hoyt’s model
A theory to understand the layout of urban areas, looks like a weirdly shaped pizza, has central business district and then factories and also all the different levels of housing costs
What does it mean when you say a somewheres place character
Relates to the specific qualities, attributes or features of a location that make it unique
What is an endogenous factor
A factor which originates from within the place and are local
Example of endogenous factors
Land use- urban or rural?, physical geography e.g is there waterfalls, infrastructure e.g roads railways broadband service
What is an exogenous factor
Those which originate from outside a place and provide relationships with no to other places
Examples of exogenous factors
People- impacts of tourists, workers exc, money and investment- trade deals

What are the factors that affect a persons perceptions of a place
Lived experience, the persons economic position, the news that the person has seen about the place
What is an insider of a certain area
Those people who feel at home within an area
Characteristics what could make someone an insider
Born there, hold citizenship to be there, speak the language and understand local slang (idioms)
What an outsider of a certain area
Opposite of insiders, feel out of place or don’t feel happy and comfortable in an area
Factors that can make a person feel like an outsider
They do not belong to the main ethnic group of a community, initially may not be accustomed to the local culture and social norms
Positives of urban places (perceptions)
High paid job opportunities, large variety of houses and lifestyles available, lots of regeneration
Negatives of urban places (perceptions)
Victorians perceived them as dangerous and threaten eine due to pollution, some areas have high crime rates and poor living conditions
Perceptions of rural areas (rural idyll)
Crime free, beautiful, pleasant area, relaxed pace of life
Reality of rural places
High house prices, most jobs are seasonal due to tourism, isolation from services
