General Knowledge Flashcards

1
Q

What is schema?

A

It is a framework for how you organize your knowledge, creating meaningful structure within knowledge. It’s a general understanding.
Ex. teacher facing the student in front; learn your expectations and syllabus

Q

What is the function of a schema?

A

1) help us know what to expect (ex. restaurant)

2) where to direct attention (listening to the professor)

3) what to encode (ex. everyone writes down everything)

4) filling in the missing pieces - inference

Q

What is the study of black shootings about?

A

Accuracy: The study was that participants were more likely to shoot the black target without a weapon and less likely to correctly shoot a white target.

Reaction Time - faster to shoot a Black target than a white target

Q

What is interference?

A

It assumes without having all the information.
- explicit memory –> dependent variable accuracy

+ The woman at the office liked to talk at the cooler (incorrect)

+ The woman at the office liked to gossip about the water (correct)

+ The woman at the office liked to talk about sports at the water cooler (that will be for males instead of a female)

Q

How do schemas shape memory?

A
  1. Better memory for schema consistent information
  2. Memory abstraction (story - old or new?)
  3. Boundary extension (panda picture)
    • when using schema –> expand the background because you would normally see that
  4. Organization (laundry story video)

Q

How do schemas lead to inference and stereotypes?

A

Inference
- Explicit memory –> d.v accuracy
= Brain Measure
+ I like my coffee with cream and dog.
* dog? huh? Do you mean sugar?
+ The nurse prepared herself for surgery
+ The nurse prepared himself for surgery
* him? You mean her?
- implicit memory –> reaction time
= Implicit attitude test (IAT)
