Plaintiff
The party who initiates a lawsuit (the “complainant” or “claimant”)
Defendant
The party being sued or accused of a crime
Prosecutor
The government attorney responsible for bringing a criminal case against a defendant
Defense Attorney
The lawyer representing the defendant in criminal or civil cases
Judge
The official who presides over a court case, making rulings on legal matters
Jury
A group of people selected to hear the evidence in a case and render a verdict
Burden of Proof
The responsibility of a party to prove their case. In criminal cases this is “beyond a reasonable doubt” and in civil cases it’s “preponderance of the evidence”
Civil Case
A legal dispute between two or more parties where compensation or specific performance is sought
Criminal Case
A legal case where the state prosecutes an individual or entity for committing a crime
