Genes and patterns of inheritance Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a sex linked condition
Certain traits are more likely to appear in males/ a particular sex
What is sex linkage
Genes which are carried on the sex chromosomes and are transmitted along with those determining sex
What is a gene
A length of DNA that codes for for the production of a specific protein
What is an allele
An alternative form of a particular gene
What is dominance
The expression of one allele over another
What is epistasis
The interaction between two different genes so that one allele interferes or inhibits the phenotypic expression of the other.
What is the genome
The complete base sequence of an organisms DNA
What is a designer drug
A drug which matches a persons profile, avoiding an adverse drug response
Explain why an X linked condition is more common in males than females
Males only have one X chromosome, so if the gene is present, the condition is expressed in the phenotype.
