bully pulpit
The president’s use of his prestige and visibility to guide or enthuse the American public.
cabinet
The heads of the fifteen executie branch departments of the federal government.
executive agreements
A formal agreement between the U.S. president and the leaders of other nations that does not require Senate approval.
executive office of the president (EOP)
The cluster of presidential staff agencies that help the president carry out his responsibilities. Currently the office includes the Office of Management and Budget, the Council of Economic Advisers, and several other units.

Formal orders issued by the president to direct action by the federal bureaucracy.

The power to keep executive communications confidential, especially if they relate to national security.

Powers the Constitution is presumed to have delegated to the National Government because it is the government of a sovereign state within the world community
league of nations
International organization founded in 1919 to promote world peace but greatly weakened by the refusal of the United States to join. It proved ineffectual in stopping aggression by Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s.
Office of Management and Budget
The organization responsible for preparing the federal budget and for central clearance of legislative proposals from federal agencies
pardon
The granting of a release from the punishment or legal consequences of a crime; a pardon can be granted by the president before or after a conviction.

law specifying the order of presidential succession following the Vice president
signing statements
A written declaration that a president may make when signing a bill into law. Usually, such statements point out sections of the law that the president deems unconstitutional
twenty-fifth amendment
A 1967 amendment to the Constitution that establishes procedures for filling presidential and vice presidential vacancies and makes provisions for presidential disability
twenty-second amendment
Passed in 1951, the amendment that limits presidents to two terms of office

The Federal Government then prosecuted Nixon. During the investigation, the government found tape recorders recording conversations in the Oval Office. Nixon was asked to give up the tapes but he refused.
