Genetic Inheritance and Pedigrees Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a gene?
Section of a chromosome that is responsible for a characteristic
What is an allele?
Alternate forms of a gene at a particular position on a chromosome
What is an autosome?
Any chromosome apart from sex chromosomes. The first 22 pairs, 44 chromosomes
What is a trait?
Any characteristic that can be passed from parent to offspring
What is a sex chromosome?
Sex-determining chromosomes, in humans X and Y. The 23rd pair, 2 chromosomes
What is a dominant trait?
A trait which requires only one allele to be present for its expression in a heterozygous (the ‘stronger’ of two alleles); represented with a capital letter
What is a recessive trait?
A trait which will only be expressed in the absence of the dominant trait (the ‘weaker’ of two alleles); represented with a lowercase letter
What is the genotype?
All genes that are present for a given characteristic (expressed or not)
What is the phenotype
Observable properties of the genotype.
What is sex linked inheritance?
Characteristics inherited via genes on the sex chromosomes X or Y
What is autosomal inheritance
characteristics inherited via genes on the autosomes (not 23rd pair)
What is co-dominance?
When two alleles(different versions of the same gene) are expressed to an equal degree within an organism. As a result, traits associated with eachallele are displayed at the same time. Neither allele is dominant
EX: Red + white flower = Red and white spotted flower
What is incomplete dominance?
When the heterozygous genotype (2 different alleles for the same gene) appears in the phenotype (observable characteristics) as a blending of the 2 alleles.
EX: Red + white flower = Pink Flower
What is a pedigree chart?
- A diagram that shows a family’s
relationships and how characteristics
are passed on from one generation to
the next - They can be used to study a hereditary
condition or trait. - They go from oldest to youngest, left to right.
What is autosomal dominant?
A single copy of a mutated gene on an autosome is enough to cause a genetic disorder.
What is autosomal recessive?
A child inherits two copies of a mutated gene, one from each parent.
