Genetics 🧬 Flashcards
(14 cards)
Genotype
Genetic makeup of a trait
Phenotype
What the genotype looks like
Species
A group of similar organisms that are capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
Variation
The differences that exist between members of the same species
Inherited characteristics
Characteristics that are controlled by our genes: eye colour, natural hair colour, blood type
Non inherited characteristics
Characteristics that are developed or learned: ability to speak a language, scars
Chromosome
thread like structures of DNA found in the nucleus
What is this? 🧬
DNA, contains an individuals genetic information
Gene
A small section of DNA that controls inheritable characteristics
Asexual reproduction
Only one parent is needed to produce offspring
Sexual reproduction
Two parents are needed to produce offspring. Each parent produces a sex cell or gamete.
Dominant gene
Controls the characteristics and prevents the recessive gene from working
Recessive gene
Only shows its effect if an individual has two copies of the recessive gene
Genetic disorder
An abnormality in an individuals genetic material caused by inherited genetic diseases or mutations.
