Genetics Flashcards
(19 cards)
Barr Body
Females shut off one of their X chromosomes during embryonic development. The inactivated X chromosome is called a Barr body and is sometimes referred to as sex chromatin.
multiple alleles
gene has 2+ alleles
blood type
complete dominance
heterozygous and homozygote for dominant allele are indistinguishable
eg. Yy YY both yellow
incomplete dominance
hybrids have appearance that is between that of two parents
eg. pink flowers
nondisjunction
failure to separate correctly- can result in something like downs trisomy 21
mendels pea plant experiment
discovered fundamental laws of inheritance
why peas?
control nation
many varieties
short generation time
mitochondrial dna
Mitochondrial DNA contains 37 genes, all of which are essential for normal mitochondrial function.
non nuclear - maternal inheritance (eggs)
sry gene
sex determining region of Y
linkage
two genes that are located close to each other on a chromosome are often inherited together.
epistasis
The important aspect of epistasis is that it doesn’t just influence the phenotype, it hides the output of another gene or genes.
test cross
determine if dominant trait is homozygous or heterozygous by crossing it with a recessive
monohybrid cross
testing for one trait
flower color
dihibrid cross
study 2 characters
( flower color and seed shape)
AaBb x AaBb
phenotype
physical appearance
genotype
genes that you have (Aa)
locus
A locus refers to the specific location of a gene on a chromosome.
dominant
is expressed
recessive
hidden unless there is two of them
