Where are the Kalahari, Namib, and Sahara deserts located?
Kalahari- South-south-southeast, 1/4 of the way from the left to middle of tail widthwise. Namib- South-south-southwest, side, long not wide. Sahara- North-north-northwest, middle of top, wide part
Where are the mountains Kilimanjaro, Ras Dashen, Sinai located?
Kilimanjaro- in the middle of SE and ESE, 3/4 of the way to shore. Ras Dashen- NE, halfway to shore. Sinai- NNE at the top
Where are the mountain ranges Atlas, Drakensburg and Rwenzori located
Atlas- NW, top, L-shape, close to shore. Drakensburg- SSE, very bottom of tail. Rwenzori- SE, top (heightwise) middle (widthwise) part of tail
Where are the rivers Congo, Nile, and Zambezi located?
Congo- loop in the centre of Africa (in Congo rainforest). Nile- side of right side of Africa, travels down to halfway, loops a bit in the middle. Zambezi- middle right hand side of tail, from centre of tail to shore on right side.
Why is there nomadism in the Horn of Africa? What are its challenges?
Because there isn’t enough good grazing land. Unreliable rains, conflict, and competition for grazing
Why is there piracy in the Horn of Africa?
Because many people on the Somali coast earned a living from fishing, and when cicil war broke out, many foreign ships took advantage and fished in Somalia’s EEZ.
What are the challenges of piracy in the Horn of Africa?
Its challenges are that 35 sailors died in 2011, from malnutrition and murder. As well as this, Egypt lost 600 million dollars through piracy, because less ships wanted ot use the Suez Canal. At the peak of piracy in 2012, the estimated cost to the global economy was 6 billion dollars (ransoms, increased security, war ships, insurance costs)
Why is there salt mining in the Horn of Africa? What are its challenges?
There is a lot of salt from the Danakil Depression, which is a good natural source of income. Some of its challenges include the heat which is often 50 degrees or higher, with no shade. Some die from this.
