Q

Explain why glaciers advance and retreat.

A

P: A glacier will advance or retreat depending on its glacial budget.
E: Glaciers are generally larger in the winter as there is more input and smaller during the summer as there is less input and more output.
E: The glacier will of of there is more input than output.
L: Therefore, the time of year will affect the glacial budget, leading to an advance or retreat as a result.

Q

Below is a description of freeze thaw weathering. Chopse the correct word from the brackets.

Water enters cracks in the rock. Over time, water in the cracks (melt/freeze) and
(shrinks/expand), making the crack deeper. As the crack gets deeper, (less/more) water enters and freezes. Over time, the process repeats and breaks up the rock.

Q

Explain how corries are formed as a result of glacial erosion.

A

During the formation of a corrie, a glacier is formed in a small hollow on a mountainside, which over time builds up and uses rotational slip to further erode the mountainside.
As the glacier explands, it uses freeze-thaw to break rocks off the mountain and they then are dragged along the bottom of the glacier. This is called abrasion.
After many years, the glacier leaves behind an armchair shape with three steep sides and a deep tarn.

Q

Explain two impacts that could happen if all of the world’s ice melted.

A

-Sea levels world rise dramatically causing many cities to be left underwater and many people’s homes destroyed. This would lead to an increase in homelessness.
-With no ice to reflect the sun’s rays, more heat would enter the atmosphere, causing temperature to increase. This would make survival more difficult.
