Building material, ingredient in the steel industry, making cement, aggregate for roads
Formation of limestone pavement
Ice sheets remove the top soil revealing bare limestone, carbonic acid in rainwater dissolves the calcium carbonate in limestone which is then washed away by rainwater, joints in the rock are widened to form grykes with clints in between
Benefits of quarrying
Creates jobs, brings money to the area, quarry company funds community projects
Farmers conflict with national park authority
They want to modernise farms to increase profit but national park authority want to retain the traditional look of the countryside
Tourists conflict with farmers
Tourists can leave gates open, damage crops, damage walls, block roads, let their dogs loose
Tourists conflict with Environmentalists
Increase footpath erosion, increase traffic congestion and pollution, leave litter and dog waste
Quarry pollution
Noise pollution from blasting, visual pollution created by large holes in the landscape, air pollution from dust which can be carried by lorries
