Geography plate boundaries Flashcards
(14 cards)
what are tectonic plates
Earths crust divided into large, rigid pieces
name 5 tectonic plates
South American plate, North American plate, Eurasian Plate, African plate, Pacific plate.
types of plate boundrys
Destructive, Constructive, transform Boundaries
what is a Destructive boundary
Plates moving towards each other, usually oceanic plates and continental plates
what is a Constructive boundary
plates moving apart allowing magma to rise giving land
what is a Transform boundary
plates slide past each other not creating or destroying land. which can cause earthquakes
how a volcano forms
formed by constructive and destructive plate boundaries
magma rises through the crust laying and cooling rock creating the cone shape volcano.
three states of volcanos
Dormant, active, extinct
how does an earthquake form
strongest at transform and destructive boundary plates
how does a Tsunamis form
Asteroids or underwater earthquakes displace water causing large waves
how does a fold mountain form
Destructive boundary’s when two continental plates collide pushing land upwards
key terms for plate boundaries
Convectional current
Epicentre( the point on the surface directly above an earthquake’s focus)
focus(point of where the earthquake started)
Richter scale
what instrument is used to measure earthquakes
seismometer
what measures the multitude of an earthquake
Richter scale
