Q

describe anxiety

A

the recognition that the events with which one is confronted lie outside the range of ones construct system

17
Q

what is the goal of fixed role therapy

A

GOAL: revise self views and views of relationship with others,
clinician develops a character sketch to help client formulate new constructs

18
Q

how did Kelly develop his theory

A

formed his theory from clinical experience , particularly working with students rather than severely disturbed individuals.
forming and testing his hypothesis to predict life events.
stemmed from experimental approach

19
Q

Why must construct be dichotomous

A

because they allow individuals to distinguish between similarities and differences.
this bipolar nature enables people to make accurate predictions about events by defining an attribute in relation to its opposites

20
Q

Why should we always be revising our constructs

A

says it must be continuously revised in order to remain useful in anticipating life events.

21
Q

describe constructive alternativsim

A

the idea that individual are free to revise or replace their constructs when they become ineffective.
allows people to adapt to new experience and changing circumstances

22
Q

what factors influence the ways we anticipate events that are similar to past events

A

anticipation event is influence by the construction corollary , which states that no event is ever identical , similarities allows us to predict future experiences

23
Q

describe how our anticipation of events , and how other people will behave , influence our personality

A

our anticipation of events and people’s behaviour influences personality by shaping how we organize our personal constructs.
if we predict events accurately , we feel more in control.
social interactions also rely on understanding others construct , allowing us to modify our behaviour accordingly

24
Q

how did Kelly assess

A

interviews : encouraged clients to describe their personal construct
self-characterization sketches: clients wrote about themselves as if they were characters in a play
role construct repertory test: test identifies the construct individuals use to classify important people In their lives

25
how many modern research inspired by Kelly theory
four
26
1. cognitive complexity VS simplicity
people with more complex constructs better predict other's behaviour
27
2. social relationships
similar constructs contribute to stronger friendships and marriage
28
3. mental health
construct instability has been linked to schizophrenia and emotional disorders
29
4. real world application
the REP test has been used in vocational counselling , market research , and management
30
describe the experience cycle
the experience cycle refers to how we test our construct against reality. when construct fails to predict an event accurately , we must modify or replace it. this ongoing process ensures that our construct system remains effective and adaptive
31
criticisms of Personal Construct Theory
it focused too much on intellectual and rational aspects the theory was developed from a limited sample of it does not explain why individual develop different construct it does not address unconscious processes or biological influences on personality its less widely accepted in mainstream American psychology compared to Europe and Australia
32
how's does personal construct differ from other theories in course
unlike psychoanalytic and behavioural theories , does not rely on unconscious drives , reinforcement , or biological factors. it instead emphasizes cognition , viewing people as active scientist who create and revise their own personal constructs to understand the world
