What was the Spartacist Uprising?
Jan 1919 = Berlin, approx 250,000 unemployed post WW1
Severe Food Shortages
Spartakusbund ( The Spartacist League)
Led by Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht and had delcared the KP (Communist Party of Germany) in December 1918.
Impacts of the Spartacist or Communist Uprising
Short Term: The Communist Uprising is crushed
Long Term: A very bitter divide between the left wing parties
Even though the Kaiser is gone and republic has formed, there is not a lot of poltical unity within Germany
The Treaty of Versailles - Terms and Provisions
Military Provisions:
a) Germany army reduced to 100,000 men
b) German Navy was reduced to a few ships for coastal patrols
Territorial Provisions:
They lost a lot of land and territories they had gained and taken from other countries over the years, given to countries such as Poland and Frace, they also lost a lot of their production areas and resources.
Colonial Provisions:
a) Germany was deemed colonially unworthy and lost all of its colonies.
Reparations:
a) Germany was to pay the cost of the war. The final reparation cost of 132000 million gold marks (32 billion US) was no arrived at until 1921.
War Guilt:
a) Germany was to accept responsibility for the War

Germany’s immediate reaction to the terms of the treaty was shock and anger
Said they would not accept it
They had no choice but to accept
