What event started the Great Depression
The Wall Street crash in America where they demanded loans (Dawes plan) back from Germany
What were the impacts in Germany from the Wall Street crash
It led to the Great Depression where 6 million were unemployed, businesses failed, morale dropped, lots of street violence, failure of democracy and a rise in extremism happened
How did the Weimar government try to stop the depression
By increasing taxes and cutting benefits- making people poorer in the process
Why were the Weimar government so bad
As they used proportional representation which meant that nothing could get done and they were not helping the people of Germany and instead article 48 was now being used
Why was article 48 so unpopular
People didn’t like that hindenburg could rule like a dictator. Especially as he was quite old so he was seen as out of touch. This led to more support for nazis.
How did the nazis use propaganda to gain power
They presented hitler as a super human figure who was strong, powerful and had all the solutions. He also was promoted as being for the people. Hitler also used modern technology to travel around . Goebbels was very good and even took over the radio/media
How did the Nazis use communists to gain power
They showed that they would fight the communists off and that they hated them. This meant many people who were scared of losing their money etc to communism would vote for the Nazis . Very little other people did this so many also voted for the Nazis as an alternative to communism.
How did the Nazis use the SA to gain power
They were all wore uniforms and were very organised. They were also strong and powerful juxtaposing the current Weimar.
What promises did they make
They promised to provide jobs and bread (food) for people. They also promised better conditions for employees. They also would crush communism
How did the Nazis use blame to gain power.
They blamed this all on the Jews and the TOV. This was good for people in Germany as they had been looking for something to blame for the problems
What problems did Hitler face in 1933
Democracy as he only had 33% and had plenty of opposition and hindenburg was still above him.
Why did Hitler call another election
As he wanted a bigger majority to pass the enabling act
What was the enabling act
It gave hitler to make laws for the next 4 years without reichstag consent
How did Hitler use the enabling act
He banned trade unions and other political parties which reduced opposition.
How did hitler convince people to vote for the enabling act
•In the Reichstag, hitler used the SA/SS to intimidate them
•They banned the communists (couldn’t vote)
•Promised the Catholic Church that they could keep control of it
What was the act of long knives
Where hitler used the SS to kill the SA, Ernst Rohm and other political opposition like Von schleicher
Why did Hitler organise the night of long knives
He didn’t see eye to eye with Ernst rohm and was worried about the power of the SA as they could overthrow Hitler. The army also disliked their power and Hitler wanted to be on their side since they were more trained.
After hindenburgs death why did Hitler have more power
He now had less opposition and could completely rule on his own. The army also swore an oath of loyalty to him.
When did Hitler become fuhrer
August 1934 after hindenburgs death he combined chancellor with president and 90% approved. The Weimar no longer existed and Hitler and all the power.
Why did the enabling act help hitler to gain votes
It scared many into supporting him

Hitler joined with the nationalists and gained 53% (majority) meaning he could now pass the enabling act
What was the reichstag fire
Where the Reichstag building was lit on fire and a communist was ‘found’ on the scene
Why did the Reichstag fire help Hitler gain power
As he claimed Germany was under attack from the communists and used it to pass the emergency decree which allowed him to attack opponents
