GIEL Topic 1.1 (Relationship between people and nature) Flashcards
(10 cards)
How are human’s dependent on nature?
1: Essentials like air and water to survive
2: Organism helps to pollinate crops for continuous supply of food
3: Spaces for recreation and leisure activities
How are nature areas dependent on humans?
1: People in the neighbourhood will ‘take care’ of the animals and plants
2: Individuals can encourage each other to enjoy nature areas in a sustainable manner.
How does nature areas benefit communities ?
1: The presence of wildlife and green spaces can enhance people’s mental well-being
2: Human activities can enhance the biodiversity of the nature areas
How does nature areas benefit us? (lower air temperature)
1: by providing shade which reduces the amount of direct sunlight
2: Cools the surrounding air through evapotranspiration
How does nature areas benefit us? (Removal of pollutants)
1: During photosynthesis vegetation absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen
2: Wetland plantation trap suspended materials and absorb excess nutrients in the water, (hence improving water quality)
How does nature areas benefit us? (Provision of recreation spaces)
1: Opportunities for outdoor activities
2: Direct and frequent interactions with nature can bring well-being and health benefits to us.
How do we bring benefits to the nature areas?
Local communities can collectively raise awareness about the value of nature areas through encouraging positive behaviour that protects the environment
What are the disadvantages we bring to nature areas?
1: Causing soil erosion and damaging vegetation
2: Worsen pollution through littering
3: Disturbing wildlife habitat, like the animals mistake the litter for food
What are the disadvantages the nature areas will bring us? (animals)
Human wildlife conflicts may increase due to:
1) Cutting down forests that are habitat to the animals for urban expansion
2) Because of growing interest in the outdoor recreational activities
What are the disadvantages nature areas will bring us? (environment)
Environmental protection is perceived due to limited development: Some people may think that by protecting the environment it would bring inconvenience to their life.
