In the 1970s Sharpe (1994) found that young girls valued marriage and bringing up a family before a career & saw educational success as unfeminine

Francis (2001) asked girls about their career ambitions, most had high aspirations and very few saw their future in traditional female jobs.
what changes in the family have occurred
Since the 1970’s there have been major changes in the family such as, increase in divorce rate, increase in lone parent families
girls may need to take on breadwinner role so new female role model
divorce rate means girls find it unreliable to depend on partner
what changes in employment have occurred
There are now more employment opportunities for women than previously as a result of the expansion of the service sector. Changes in the law such as the 1970 Equal pay act and the Sex discrimination act give women more employment rights.

Since 1975 the pay gap between men and women has almost halved
