Q

What is GIS used for?

A

The main purpose of GIS is to display data on a map. This helps us find patters , make decisions and decide on actions to take. GIS data is well organised in layers. Each layer has one theme. A GIS allows us to turn layers on and off, so that we are only seeing the layers that are helpful to us.

Q

What is a raster map ?

A

Raster maps are images made by a series of coloured dots on a screen ( pixels) just like high quality digital photographs! These are usually used for backround maps for other information.

Q

What is a vector map?

A

Vector maps have features such as woods, roads or buildings). Each feature is recorded using latitude and longitude and enables a GIS to link information from spreadsheets to the maps.

Q

All about Asia’s borders!

A

Asia and Europe are one landmass, so it is perhaps
strange that they are considered separate continents.
This distinction dates back to the Ancient Greeks,
who called everything east of Greece ‘Asia’ (which
means ‘east’). The border between the two
continents starts in the north, on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. It then runs south through Russia
the country of Russia, following the line of the Ural Mountains. At the cassias sea it runs in a roughly east-west direction,
Passing through the Black Sea before reaching the Mediterranean at turkey.

Q

More about the Asian borders !

A

Asia has a much shorter border with Africa. The border is found in the Sinai peninsula which is in the country of Egypt The only other continent with which Asia shares a border is Oceania Most of the border runs through the ocean, but the island of New Guinea is divided into two; half belongs to Indonesia, and is in Asia, and half is the Oceania, and is the country of Papua New Guinea.

20
Q

What is GDP ?

A

GDP is short for Gross Domestic Product – it is the total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a single year. That basically means it is the nation’s ‘income’ in a year. We usually express it in US dollars ($), so we can compare all countries easily without having to think about exchange rates.

21
Q

What is GDP per person?

A

GDP per person is a country’s Gross Domestic Product – it’s national income in one year – divided by its population. This effectively gives is a measure of the average wealth per person, and allows us to compare levels of wealth in countries with very different population sizes. Because it is an average figure, we must always remember that there will be some people who earn more than the average, and some people who earn less.

22
Q

What is PPP?

A

PPP stands for Purchasing Power Parity. Economists write this when they have adjusted a country’s GDP per person to reflect the cost of living in a country. Two countries might have the same GDP per person, and therefore appear to have the same levels of wealth, but if it much cheaper to buy the essentials for life in one country, the people there are effectively better off, and economists might boost the GDP per person figure to reflect this; if they do, they will write PPP in brackets beside the figure.

23
Q

What is Asia like today?

A

Asia is the biggest and most diverse continent on Earth. It has more people, more cultures and a bigger range of climates and environments than anywhere else.
• Asia population is 4.5 billion people – that’s 60%of people on Earth
• More than half of these people (2.7 billion) live in just two counties - China and India.
• There are thousands of different ethnic groups – over 2 thousand In India alone
• there are thousands of languages
• Many religions are practised in Asia – the top three are Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism.
• About 58% of the population live in rural areas, most as farmers
• 7of the world’s ten biggest cities are Asian, including the biggest, Shanghai.
• About half Asia’s population lives in poverty; there is more poverty in rural areas
• There is great wealth too – China has a few billionaires and India has a lot, compared to
Many in the UK

24
Q

Asia’s industry:

A

Central Asia overall, these countries are not rich but they have oil, gold and other materials, and are starting to exploit them.

North Asia , Russia is doing fine. It sells oils and gas to other countries. It exports them by pipe line.

East Asia the main industrial region. In China, Japan p, South Korea or Taiwan, there are lots of things you can buy!

Middle East it has a big share of the worlds oil and gas reserves. This has made some countries very wealthy. For example Qatar!

South east Asia, these countries depend mainly on agriculture. They export rice and other foods, rubber and other things but the industries are developing too.

South Asia, Asia’s poorest region. Exports include textiles and foodstuff. India has most of the industry and runs its services and call centres for other counties.

25
What is a colony?
A country that is under the control of another country
26
British Asian colony’s
India, Pakistan, bangkadeshh
27
How many people are in Singapore per km2?
7697 people!
28
What is population distribution?
Population is the number of people living somewhere. The population of Asia is about 4.3 billion people. • However, these people do not all live in the same part of Asia and neither are they spread equally around the continent. Some parts of Asia are more populated than other parts. The pattern formed by people being spread across the continent is called the population distribution.
29
What is population density?
We know that Asia’s population is distributed unevenly. | • Population density is a measure of how many people live in a certain area (usually people per km2).
30
High and lowly populated areas:
Use choropleth maps
31
What is a biome?
A biome is a large region with its own distinct climate, plants and animals. The climate is the most important characteristic of a biome, because climate dictates what plants and animals will live there. Some examples of biomes include: desert, savanna, rainforest, polar, marine and temperate (like the UK). Asia is a continent with a range of different biomes.
32
Types of Asia’s biomes?
``` Hot desert biome Cold desert biome Temperate forest biome Tropical rainforest biome Taiga biome Steppe biome Tundra biome Mountain biome Mangroves biome ```
