Glaciation Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the two named examples of glaciated landscapes (UK)?
Cairngorms+Lake district
Describe freeze thaw
Water from melted snow collects in cracks of rocks above glaciers. Water freezes overnight, expands, pressure breaks rock apart. Sharp bits left over = Scree
Describe plucking
Sheet of ice melts due to friction going over rock mass. Water refreezes due to overlying pressure on ice. Refreezes in cracks and as glacier moves loose pieces of rock plucked out.
Describe abrasion
Fragments of frozen into base of glacier are dragged along with ice, wearing away bedrock through sandpaper action.
Explain first stage of U-SHAPED VALLEY
Valleys are R shaped because they are carved by rivers
Second stage of U-SHAPED VALLEY
Glacier moves down hill due to gravity. Name 2 x erosion processes (as usual, plucking = steepens valley walls, abrasion = deepens base)
Final stage of U-SHAPED VALLEY
After glaciation, left with overwidened valley, might be left with misfit stream, steep and flat floor.
Give first stage of formation of Corrie
Snow accumulates in a north facing hollow. Layers of snow pile on top of one another, the pressure creating névé ice.
Give second stage of formation of corrie
Give 1 erosion process (use freeze thaw preferably). Steepens peak of corrie.
Give final stage of formation of corrie
Jagged summit + scree left by freeze thaw. Loch/tarn forms at the base of corrie when it rains.
