Glands Flashcards
(29 cards)
Glands: list
Lacrimal, Salivary, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Thymus
Endocrine
NO DUCTS; secretes hormones
Exocrine
HAS DUCTS
Saliva: functions
Lubricates, Cleanses, Immune, Digestive (amylase)
Major Salivary Glands
Parotid, Submandibular, Sublingual
Parotid Salivary Gland
largest; encapsulated; 25% volume; Mixed, mainly serous
Stenson’s Duct
duct associated with Parotid; pierces buccinator muscle > parotid papilla
7th Cranial Nerve
[facial nerve] travels through Parotid, doesn’t innervate
Parotid Pathology
mumps
Submandibular Salivary Gland
2nd largest; encapsulated; 60-65% volume!; Mixed serous/mucous; POSTERIOR submandibular fossea
Warton’s Duct
associated with Submandibular Gland; opens into sublingual caruncle
Submandibular Pathology
stones due to long, winding ducts; blockages
Sublingual Salivary Gland
smallest; unencapsulated; Mixed mostly mucous; ANTERIOR to submandibular gland
Bartholin Duct
short; associated with Sublingual Glands
Minor Salivary Glands
exocrine; smaller; more numerous; scattered in oral cavity; Mixed mostly mucous
vonEbner Glands
minor salivary gland associated with circumvallate papilla; serous
Sialolith
stones blocking salivary glands
Ranula
stones causing enlargement of major glands
Mucocele
stones causing enlargement of minor glands
Thyroid Gland
largest endocrine gland; thyroxine (metabolism); two lateral lobes
Goiter
enlarged thyroid gland
Graves Disease
Hyperthyroid
Parathyroid Gland
4 small endocrine; parathyroid hormone - calcium + phosphorus; located within/adjacent to thyroid
Thymus Gland
endocrine; immune T-cells + WBC; grows until puberty then shrinks; located at base of neck
