Nerves 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Nervous System: Divisions
Central [brain/spinal] / Peripheral [nerves outside CNS]
Afferent Nerve
[sensory] periphery of body TO brain/spinal
Efferent Nerve
[motor] FROM brain/spinal to periphery
Autonomic NS
part of PNS, operates w/o conscious control
Sympathetic NS
subdivision of Autonomic NS, “fight or flight”
Parasympathetic NS
subdivision of Autonomic, “rest and digest”, returns body to normal state
Cranial Nerves
Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Vestibulocochlear, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory Hypoglossal
Olfactory
[1] transmits smell; *afferent
Optic
[2] transmits sight; *afferent
Oculomotor
[3] moves eyeball; *efferent
Trochlear
[4] moves eye; *efferent
Trigeminal
[5] largest! most important for dental! 3 divisions serving teeth, tongue, oral cavity and skin of face/head; *afferent + efferent
3 Divisions of Trigeminal
Ophthalmic [V1], Maxillary [V2], Mandibular [V3]
Ophthalmic Nerve
[V1] enters through Superior Orbital Fissure *sensory
Maxillary Nerve
[V2] enters by foramen rotundum *sensory
Mandibular Nerve
[V3] enters by foramen ovale *sensory + motor
Abducens
[6] moves eye *efferent
Facial
[7] supplies muscles of facial expression, exits through Stylomastoid Foramen. Has 2 branches. *afferent + efferent
Greater Petrosal
[facial branch] efferent = lacrimal/nasal/minor salivary ; afferent = taste sensation to palate
Chorda Tympani
[facial branch] efferent = submandibular/sublingual ; afferent = taste from body of tongue
Vestibuloccochlear
[8] hearing + balance *afferent
Glossopharygeal
[9] efferent = pharnygeal and stylopharyngeal ; afferent = base of the tongue
Vagus
[10] efferent = soft palate, pharynx, larynx, thorax, to stomach ; afferent = small, ear sensation
Accessory
[11] exits through jugular foramen. *efferent = SCM, trapezius, soft palate, pharynx
