Enculturation
Gospel must be “translated” into idioms of the local cultures.
“Enculturation is the interaction and adaptation of the gospel in various contexts, a practice modeled on the incarnation, that is, the Word of God become flesh in Jesus, revealing God’s love for all.”
Theology in the West relies upon
scholastic philosophy, reason, general principles applied to specific issues.
World Theology
Communitarian, interdenominational, explores the gospel in their particular cultural context
Latin American theology
officially Catholic for many centuries.
• 1960’s, 70’s – Justice in the World, 1971
• “Comunidades de base”, theology from below
• Jesus as liberator not just of personal sin but also from structural sin – Exodus – a church of the poor.
• Liberation Theology – starting point is with the people in their situations – Exodus, reign of God, prophecy
African theology
Narrative theology, proverbs, songs, myths, rituals, life experiences for reflecting on their experience
Asian theology
Live within Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Different reasoning and logic in Eastern philosophy – assumes a harmony undergirds all of reality and daily life.
