Define ‘globalisation’.
The idea of widening worldwide interconnectedness in all aspects of life from cultural to the individual.
What would optimists and pessimists say about globalisation?
Optimists
- The change is positive whereby it brings about solutions of underdevelopment
Pessimists
- The change is negative in which Westernisation imposes culture on minority countries
List 3 different forms of globalisation.

Describe what economic globalisation involves.
- Spreading of TNCS
- International division of labour
- Expansion of capitalism worldwide
- Cheap labour
Describe what cultural globalisation involves.
- Increased connections between cultures
- Potentially bringing diversity and benefits or damage to other cultures
- Religious beliefs becoming more prevalent worldwide
- Spread of music
Describe what political globalisation involves.
- The growing importance of global institutions outside of countries (IMF and UN)
- The break up of old empires and relationships
- Position of importance of nations
- Increased nationalism and far right policies

1) Total earned from worldwide tourism in 2006 was $733 billion
2) 75 countries earned more than $1 billion each from tourism that year
3) There will be 1.6 billion international tourists by 2020
What are the positive and negative impacts of tourism.
Positive - Experiencing other cultures - Boosting economy Negative - Obesity becoming widespread - Some cultures become diminished or adapted
What are the pros and cons of tourism in the 3 forms of globalisation?
1) Economic
- Jobs within tourism still receive low pay
- Natural disasters may affect tourism (e.g. earthquakes in Japan)
2) Cultural
- Cultures can be diminished through appealing to western tourists (e.g. continental breakfasts in Iceland)
3) Political
- Terrorists can target tourist-heavy places
- Governments can prohibit local community from benefiting from tourism
What are the positive and negative impacts of fashion.
Positive
- Can give jobs to those in places that may lack from them elsewhere
- Can give sense of solidarity
Negative
- Cheap labour and poor working conditions in developing countries
- Culture can diminish due to westernisation of fashion
