Q

Identify what is wrong with the below sentence

Growth and development in the field of women’s history have realized that the definition of history needed to expand as well

A

Growth and development cannot realize anything, the issue with the sentence is, even though SV pair exists, it does not make sense logically. So we will need to either change the subject of the sentence or verb of the sentence

Growth and development in the field of women’s history have led to the realization that the definition of history needed to expand as well

Q

Why do we treat subjects joined by an “and” to be plural while subjects joined by an additive phrase to be “singular”

A

When we join two subjects using “and” we put equal emphasis on both the entities.

When joined by “And”

  1. emphasis is equal on both the entities
  2. equally responsible for the action

When joined by an additive phrase

  1. “A as well as B” - afterthought that adds more info to the main subject - A
  2. A was primarily responsible for the action

A

With MAMS i.e. Most, All, Many, and Some use the prepositional phrase to guide you what verb form to use.
