aims of the 1988 education reform act
marketisation- making schools compete for better funding (the better a school does one year, more money it recieves the next), turns schools into a business almost
parentocracy- having a choice on where to send your child, which effects the school budget
improve efficiency
education equips children with the skills for work, fostering economic growth
what policies did they introduce
national curriculm- all students taught the same thing, from age7-16, core subjects
open enrolment- parents select multiple schools but specifiy one as their ‘first choice’, shop around
national testing- sats and gcses
ofsted- inspects and grades schools, reports are published and underachieving schools are shut.
league tables- performance data so parents could make informed choices.
funding formula- funding for schools based on how many pupils they attracted
EVAL of era
Ball- schools are more selective, middle class parents want middle class schools, these schools with more m/c students perform better, easy to teach whilst maintaining league table status.
Ineuality of opportunity- best schools are oversubscribed, they cream skim best pupils, better results and in even more demand the next year.

vocationalism- expanding education that focuses on the skills for a particular job

whitty- labours policies are just cosmetic and only present a positive image
trowler- increased funding and standards shows their commitment to reducing inequality
ema- many students didnt use it efficiently
introduced uni fees of 1000, unaccessible
coalition policies
curriculm reform- more rigorous, removed as level from a level, removed opportunity to retake, more emphasis on spelling and grammar
ebacc- students had to take core subjects, mfl and humanties., greater opportunity in further education
ema was scrapped
tuition fees- 9000 pounds, lib dem promised not too
pupil premium- extra money to schools depending on number of pupils from disadvantaged backgrunds, 900 pound, spent on discretion of school
t level - work experince in a trade, level 3 qual
