labelling theory
proposed by becker, can be positive or negative, teachers apply labels to pupils based on behavior,potential or ability
app-becker, interviewed 60 teachers, m/c students seen as ideal image, w/c seen as less able so teachers had lower expectations of them
educational triage
proposed by gilbourn, schools categorise pupils into those who will achieve anyways ( dont require much input), hopeless cases (waste of effort), and borderline (require attention to pass gcses). links to league tables
self fulfiling prophecy
if a label is applied enough it will stick, if a student is labelled as unintelligent, they may give up in which case the label becomes true
app- rosenthal, teachers told about new iq test that could predict ‘bloomers’, chosen at random, 8 months later those students outperformed
subcultures
group with its own set of values and culture. pro-school (high sets, comitted to values, match school values), anti (low sets, status through misbehaving)
app- fuller, black girls seen as failures, worked hard to rpove teachers wrong, pupils have ability to resist labels
sets and streams
setting- allocating groupings based on ability for subjects
streaming- allocating groups based on ability in all subjects
app- gilbourn ( lower sets cant sit higher tier exams, grades no higher than a 5, difficult to progress onto higher level courses
