Gradient Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the steps for finding the gradient?
- Find two accurate points
- Find the change in y and the change in x
- Gradient = change in y ➗ change in x
- check if it is positive or negative.
How do we find two accurate points when calculating gradient?
Look at the top right quadrant to find two whole numbers.
How do you find the change in y and x?
For the y coordinate you subtract the smaller y coordinate from the bigger y coordinate.
What is the formula to find the gradient?
Change in y ➗ change in x
How can you check that the gradient is positive or negative?
If it slopes uphill from left to right it is positive and if it slopes downhill in goes from right to left.
What is the equation for a straight line?
y = mx + c
What is y = mx + c ?
The equation for a straight line
What does the m stand for in y = mx + c ?
The m stands for gradient
What does the c stand for in y = mx + c.
Where the line crosses the y axis ( the y intercept )
What is 2x + y = 4 rearranged into y = mx + c ?
Y = -2x + 4 or (m = -2 c = 4 )
How do you find the equation of a line on a graph in the form of y = mx + c ?
- find m (gradient)
- read off c ( y - intercept)
- use these to write the equation in the form y = mx + c ( y = 2x + 10)
How do you draw a straight line use y = mx + c ?
- get the equation into the form y = mx + c
- put a dot at the value of c ( y- intercept)
- go along one unit (on the x axis) go up or down by m (gradient) and make another dot repeat the step a few times in both directions
4 when you have four or five dots draw a straight line through them - double check the line is going up or down hill depending on whether the gradient was positive or negative
How do we know if two lines are parallel?
When they both have the same gradient.
