What is a noun?
Person, place, or thing.

Represents a group of people, animals, or things.
Examples: family, flock, furniture.

Takes the place of a noun or other pronoun.
What are possessive pronouns?
My, mine, his, etc.
Define personal pronouns.
Can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person, singular or plural.
What is an adjective?
Word/phrase that modifies a noun.
What is a verb?
Word or phrase used to express an action or state of being.
What are linking verbs?
Do not show an action; reflect a state of being or relate to the five senses.
Examples: am, is, was, were, looks, smells.

What are coordinating conjunctions?
And, but, or, so, nor, for, and yet.
What are correlative conjunctions?
Neither…nor; either…or.
What is an interjection?
Word or phrase that expresses emotion or exclamation.
Define clause.
Group of words that has a subject and a predicate.
What is an independent clause?
Expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
What is a dependent clause?
Begins with a subordinating conjunction and does not express a complete thought.
What are common subordinating conjunctions?
After, because, before, until, since, when.
What is an indirect object?
Person or thing indirectly affected by the action of the verb.
What is a direct object?
Answers the question of who, what, for what, to what.
