What is a Direct object?
A noun, pronoun, or group of words that tells who or what receives the action of the verb. Example: Mr. Williamson teaches English. English would be the direct object
What is a predicate nominative?
A noun or a pronoun that identifies the subject. Example: Mr. Chang is a florist. Florist is the predicate nominative
What is a predicate adjective?
An adjective that describes the subject. Example: the flowers look beautiful. Beautiful would be the predicate adjective
What is a common noun?
Names any person, place, thing, or idea. Example: the leader of the organization works in the city. leader, organization, and city are the common nouns.
What is a Proper noun?
Names a specific person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns always begin with capital letters. Example: Danica works for the Red Cross in Anchorage. Danica, Red Cross, and Anchorage are the proper nouns.
What is a concrete noun?
Names a thing that you can see, hear, or smell, taste, or touch. Example: the campers saw a wolf near the pond. Campers, wolf, and pond are the concrete nouns.
What is an abstract noun?
Names an idea, a quality, a feeling, or a characteristic. Example: their fear disappeared when the fun began. Fear and fun are the abstract nouns.
What is a collective noun?
A word that names a group of people or things. Example: our family visited Alaska last year. Family would be the collective noun.
What is a compound noun?
Consists of two or more words. Examples: mankind, polar bear, laptop, honeybee
What is a plural noun?
Names two or more than one person, place, thing, or idea. Examples: shoes, bosses, lunches
What is a possessive noun?
Names who or what owns or has something. Examples: woman’s, boys’
What are pronouns?
Words that replace nouns or other pronouns. Example: they, he, it, she
What is an antecedent?
The word the pronoun replaces. Example: many students read their books on the bus. The pronoun is their, and the antecedent is students
What is a personal pronoun?
To be subjects and objects. Example: i will go with you and them. I, you, and them are personal pronouns
What is a possessive pronoun?
To show possession. Example: my ticket is here. Where is yours? My and yours are possessive pronouns
What is an indefinite pronoun?
To express an unspecific person, thing or amount. Example: nobody should smoke. Many people are late. Nobody and many are indefinite pronouns
What is a demonstrative pronoun?
To point out specific things or people. Example: this balcony. Look at that! This and that are demonstrative pronouns
What is a subject pronoun?
Acts like the subject of a sentence or clause. Example: they joined the tour in Egypt. They is the subject pronoun. A subject pronoun also renames the subject and acts like the predicate nominative after a linking verb. Example: the guides were Ava and she. She would be the subject pronoun
What is an object pronoun?
As a direct object, an object pronoun answers the question whom or what after an action verb. Example: the travelers saw pyramids and loved them. Them is the object pronoun. An object pronoun can also follow a prepositional as the object of a prepositional phrase. Example: the bus stopped by us. Us is the object pronoun
What is active voice?
When the subject preforms an action. Example: scientists see new species of fish every week. The word see is what makes it active voice
What is passive voice?
When the subject receives the action of the verb. Example: new species of fish are seen by scientists. Are seen is what make it passive voice
What is a participle?
A verb form that acts like an adjective and ends in -ing or -ed. Example: the tired borates battled the blowing storm. Tired and blowing are the participles
What is a participial phrase?
A group of words that includes a participle and the other words that complete its meaning. Example: Ann, hoping for the best, calmed the others. Hoping for the best is the participial phrase
What is a gerund?
A verb form that acts like a noun and ends in -ing. Like a noun, a gerund is used as a subject, a predicate nominative, a direct object, or an object of a preposition. Example: boating is their favorite sport. Boating is the gerund
