What is a simple sentence?
A sentence with one independent clause.
Example: The cat ran under the porch.
What is a compound sentence?
A sentence with two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction.
Example: The cat ran under the porch, and the dog ran after him.
What is a complex sentence?
A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Example: The cat, who is scared of dogs, ran under the porch.
What is an independent clause?
A clause that can stand alone as a sentence.
Example: The dog ate her homework.
What is a dependent clause?
A clause that cannot stand alone and starts with a subordinating conjunction.
Example: Because the dog ate her homework.
What are transitions used for?
To connect ideas in compound-complex sentences.
What is a run-on sentence?
A sentence that incorrectly joins two independent clauses without proper punctuation.
Example: No: It’s a beautiful day were going to the park.
How do you correct a run-on sentence?
