Talent had no correlation to performance for her math students

Galton first said performance is unusual ability, exceptional zeal and a capacity for hard work
People get distracted by talent and when they see someone good at something automatically assume it is due to talent.
The most dazzling human achievements are the aggregate of countless individual elements each of which is in a sense ordinary
Superlative performance is really a confluence of dozens of small skills or activities. Each one learned or stumbled upon which I’ve been carefully drilled into habit, and that are fitting together in a synthesized hole.
If we think of great performer as talented, then we feel comfortable and not having to try because we could never achieve the same

Talent x effort = skill
Skill x effort = achievement
Effort counts twice
Grit is more about stamina than intensity
Grit has two components passion and perseverance
Passion intensity does not matter. Passion longevity dies. Think of a compass rather than fireworks that dazzle then fizzle.
Passion is caring about the same ultimate goal every day. Taking one small step forward rather than one yo the side.
In doing some thing over and over again some thing that was never natural becomes almost 2nd nature
Finding your passion is rarely an aha moment. Passion for your work is a little bit of discovery followed by a lot if development and then a lifetime of deepening.
Pg 107 and 108
Always seek novelty. For the beginner novelty is anything new, for the expert novelty is nuance.
The development is skill goes through several years each of: discovery is f interest, development and deependingnof interest
During the discovery phase children must be encouraged and supported
Deepen interest over the years by asking questions, seeking nuance, finding like minded people and having patience
The way to devolve grit is practice or time on task. But better time on task 20 years of experience not one year of experience 20 times
Kaisen is required. Not negative of dissatisfaction but positive of no matter how good working for better
Anders. Start with a small specific stretch goal. Work ever practice to beat it. Seek feedback on what you did wrong/weaknesses. Practice excessively to lock it in.
Deliberate practice is positive but not fun. Also the alternative of mindlessly going through the motions has its own negatives
Have a routine of practice the same place, same time every day. There is no more miserable human being than the one for whom the beginning of work must be decided every day
