Gross anatomy of oral cavity Flashcards
2 Regions of oral cavity
- oral vestibule
2. oral cavity proper
Vascular supply on teeth
Common carotid artery -> external carotid artery -> maxillary artery -> superior/inferior alveolar artery
Which area does the internal carotid artery supply?
Brain and skull
What are the nerves supplying different teeth? Which regions do they supply?
- Anterior superior alveolar nerve - 13 to 23
- middle superior alveolar nerve - maxillary premolars (14,15,24,25)
- Posterior superior alveolar nerve - maxillary molars
- Main trunk of inferior alveolar nerve - 35-38, 45-48 (posterior)
- Incisive branch of inferior alveolar nerve - 34-44 (anterior)
Nerves supplying gingiva
Maxillary: - anterior/middle/posterior superior alveolar nerve (buccal) - nasopalatine nerve (anterior palatal) - greater palatine nerve (posterior palatal)
Mandibular:
- mental nerve from inferior alveolar nerve (labial)
- buccal nerve (buccal)
- lingual nerve (lingual)
5 Muscles of soft palate
- Musculus uvulae
- Tensor veli palatini
- Levator veli palatini
- Palatopharyngeus
- Palatoglossus
What is the oral cavity bounded by posteriorly?
Oropharyngeal isthmus
What is the name of the fibrous connective tissue that provides attachment for various soft palate muscles?
Palatine aponeurosis
What is the tongue divided into left & right half by?
Median sagittal septum
4 Intrinsic muscles of tongue
- Superior longitudinal
- Inferior longitudinal
- Transverse
- Verticalis
4 Extrinsic muscles of tongue and their innervation
- Genioglossus - CNXII
- Hyoglossus - CNXII
- Styloglossus - CNXII
- Palatoglossus - CNX, XI
Vascular supply of tongue
Common carotid artery -> lingual artery
Lingual vein -> internal jugular vein
