1
Q

Why are elements lower down group one more reactive

A
  • atomic radius increases = electron in outmost shell is further away from the nucleus
  • forces of attraction between the positively charged nuclei and -ve electron decreases
  • The outermost electron is more easily lost, make it more reactive
2
Q

Describe the reaction of lithium with water

A
  • fizzes
  • slowly dissolves
  • sits ontop of water
3
Q

Describe the reaction of sodium with water

A
  • vigorous bubbling
  • quickly moves around ontop of the water
  • dissolves quickly
4
Q

Describe the reaction of potassium with water

A
  • ignites when it touches the water = lilac flame
  • sparks
  • dissolves very quickly
5
Q

What solution to the group 1 elements produce when dissolved in water

A

A metal hydroxide solution which is an alkaline

6
Q

What gas is given off during the reactions of group 1 elements with water

A

Hydrogen gas
