Q

What are the trends in group 1

A

More reactive the further down the group. More reactive means easier to loose an electron in the outer shell when. This means the electrons on the outer shells are less strongly attached.

Q

Key reactions of group 1

A

4Li+ O2 — 2Li2O (white compound)
2Na+2H2O(water)——- 2NaOH(alkaline)+H2(fizzing)
2Na+Cl2——2NaCl (white compound)

Q

How do we explain the reactivity of group 1?

A

Become 1+ ions
Also
Outer most shell further away the further down the group so the increased distance weakens the attractive force meaning the electron can be lost more easily

Q

How do group 1 reaction with water ?

A

Produces metal hydroxide and Hydrogen gas
Reacts vigorously

Potassium is the first one that sets fire and it reacts extremely rapidly and a gas is produced

Q

How do group 1 metals react with chlorine gas ?

A

Form white metal chloride salts

Group 1 metal will loose 1 electron to become +1 ion

Chlorine gains 1 electron to become a -1 chloride ion

If it’s lithium it looses one and chlorine gains one and it forms Lithium chloride

Q

How do alkali metals/ group 1 react with Oxygen ?

A

Form ( the metal) oxide
React rapidly
Going down the group they react more rapidly

If is was sodium reacting with oxygen it produces Sodium oxide

Q

How would lithium react with oxygen ?

A

2 Li atoms would loose there outer shell electron to become +1 ions

Oxygen would gain to electrons to have a full outer shell and be a -2 oxide ion

4Li + 2O —-> 2Li2O

You would draw it as the square box around the ions

Q

Will all group 1 metals react with oxygen the same way ?

A

Yes, this is due to them all having the same outer shell electron

4Li + O2— 2Li2O

4Na + O2 —— 2Na2O

The symbol equation doesn’t change
