group 2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
atomic radius?
atomic radius increases down the group as the atoms have more shells of electrons making the atom bigger
melting and boiling points?
melting and boiling points as the bonds weaken as the atomic size increases
the distance between the cations and delocalised electrons increases and therefore the electrostatic forces between the positive ions and delocalised electrons weaken
ionisation energy
the first and second ionisation energy decrease down the groups
the outer electron are held more weakly because they are further from the nucleus and therefore become more shielded
reactivity
reactivity increases down the groups as the atomic radius increase they become more shielding and the nucleus attraction decreases and it is easier to remove over electrons
reactions with oxygen
group 2 will react with oxygen. to form a metal oxide (MO)
2Mg + O2 = 2MgO
group 2 oxides with water
the oxides of group 2 will react with water to release hydroxide ions and form alkaline solutions
e.g CaO + H2O = Ca 2+ + 20H-
reactions with water
group 2 reacts with h20 to form a alkaline hydroxide with hydrogen (M(OH2)
reactions with dilute acids
MASH
use of group 2 compounds as a base
calcium hydroxide - increases the ph of acidic soils and neutralises acids in the soil
magnesium hydroxide - used in medicine to neutralise excess acid and to treat indigestion
