Group 7 : The Halogens 💃💃 Flashcards
As you go down group 7 the melting point…. ( and why )
Increases
Because the forces between larger molecules are stronger
What is the most reactive element?
Fluorine
Why are experiments with the halogens used in a fume cupboard?
Because the halogens are toxic
The reactivity…
Decreases down the group, because outer electron is further away from the nucleus.
What are the halogens? ( hint pairs )
Diatomic- they go around as two elements
Properties of the halogens:
Low melting and boiling points which increases down the group.
Reactivity decreases down the group
Poor conductors of heat and electricity
Reactions of the halogens:
React with metals to form ionic compounds called salts
eg// magnesium+ chlorine> magnesium chloride
Why is fluorine very reactive?
Because it has less electron shells and is closer to the nucleus and it has less electron shielding
What is the trend down the group?
Melting and boiling point increases down the group
Reactivity decreases down the group
