Growth of Bacteria and Aseptic Techniques ( Topic 4) Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What does using aseptic techniques mean?
A
Working in sterile conditions throughout the experiment.
2
Q
Why is using aseptic techniques important?
A
- It prevents foreign pathogens from contaminating the agar plates.
- It prevents you from infection others with the bacteria you were inoculating.
3
Q
What are the aseptic techniques used pre-inoculation?
A
- Sterilise all equipment to remove all microbes.
- Sterilise the work surface using disinfectant to kill all microbes.
- Wash your hands with soap to kill all the microbes on your hands.
- Cover any cuts with bandages.
- Wear gloves.
4
Q
What are the aseptic techniques during inoculation?
A
- Work near a Bunsen burner, so that the convection current sterilises the air.
- Only open the lid slightly, and when necessary, to prevent foreign microbes from landing on the agar.
5
Q
What are the aseptic techniques during post-inoculation?
A
- Sterilise all equipment used to kill any microbes.
- Sterilise the work surface with disinfectant to kill any microbes.
- Wash your hands with soap to kill all the microbes on your hands.
- Dispose of any gloves used immediately.
