How old is the idea of globalisation?
4 flows have been around for centuries and some are still around.
Negatives of Core-Periphery model
- to an extent is colonial, rich get richer and poor get poorer
- can be culturally very globalised but not economically (South Korea)
- not an inclusive ‘global village’ as you are either in one or the other
-doesn’t factor in NEEs/BRICS
Give examples of how Westernisation is spread
Spread by TNCs, UNICEF, NGOs, international organisations
Outline flows pre 1950s
People (slavery), IMF, World Bank, WTO
Outline flows 60’s to 80s
- Asian Tigers, flow of people due to OPEC crisis, financial deregulation so more trade and flow of capital and goods
Outline flows after the 90’s+
- Fall of Soviet Union, growth of BRICS, Eurozone allows free flows of people around Europe
Give examples of how flows have lengthened, deepened and grown over time
Lengthened - diasporas, planes, social media
Grown - internet cable, telephone
Deepened - satellites, underground pipes, the grid

A process in which the constraints of geography on economic, social, political, and cultural arrangements recede, in which people become increasingly aware that they are receding, and in which people act accordingly

How does social connectivity vary by age and wealth?
- Older people have less technological ability and higher wages with more experience travelling
- Wealthier people have more money to travel
What effect does social media have globally?
-‘flatter Earth’
- easier access to trade markets
- more advertisements reaching more people
- can cause a divide due to accessibility issues
Effect of improvements to education and literacy?
- More people get higher paying jobs
- ‘Brain Drain’ from MNCs on LICs
- Cheaper, better quality work can drive an economy (India)
How did Qatar invest in the UK?
The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) invested over £3bn in UK real estate and infrastructure
How has neocolonialism by China affected Pakistan and other LICs?
- In 2017 Pakistan borrowed so heavily they almost couldnt pay back loans
- If LIC can’t pay China back, China can gain political power over them
What are fusion foods?
Eastern ideas coming into Western culture and vice versa
What is seen as the most important aspect of globalisation and why?
Economic, as top 100 TNCs employ 6 million people and are involved in 30% of global sales

- markets allowing for transport of goods and services.
- Ideas and cultures spread through advertisements.
- Supply chains.
- GPNs
