What is a hair follicle?
a sac-like structure which folds down form the epidermis into the dermal layer and from which hair grows
What is a peripheral connective tissue sheath?
The outermost wall of a hair follicle, derived from the dermis
glassy membrane
external root sheath
What is the root?
the portion of hair in which keratinization is still ongoing
cuticle
melanocytes
What is the medulla?
the central core of the hair consisting of large cells and air spaces, absent in fine hair
What is terminal hair?
coarse, long hair ( coarse in comparision to vellus hair)
hair papilla
cortex
What is the cuticle?
the outermost layer of a hair which is composed of a single layer of flattened shingle like cells
What is the epithelial root sheath?
the innermost portion of the follicle wall, mainly an invagination of the epidermis, has an internal and external layer
Which pigment is responsible for red hair?
trichosiderin
What is a glassy membrane?
a thickened basal lamina which constitutes the second outermost layer of the follicle wall
What is vellus hair?
pale, fine hair

peripheral connective tissue sheath
What is a hair papilla?
a small nipple-like projection of dermal tissue that protrudes into the hair bulb
What is a hair shaft?
the portion of hair in which keratinization if complete
Where is hair pigment made?
the base of the hair follicle
hair matrix
What is the cortex?
the bulky layer of flattened cells that that surrounds the medulla
